The All-share index, SEMDEX, finished at 1,688.91 points on Monday 3 September 2012, losing 4 points during the week. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, ended the session of Monday at 5,150.38 points. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 329.11 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 169.77 billion.

Total turnover amounted to Rs 286.1 million during the week. Shares of The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Rogers, State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), New Mauritius Hotels (NMHL) and Swan Insurance Co. Ltd (Swan) were exchanged for a total value of Rs 103.3 million, Rs 36.5 million, Rs 32.9 million, Rs 22.4 million and Rs 20 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of MCB, Rogers, SBM, NMHL and Swan closed at Rs 162, Rs 308, Rs 82, Rs 57.50 and Rs 325, respectively, on Monday 3 September 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 41 stocks figuring on the Official List, 4 moved up during the week, 21 remained stable and 16 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Go Life International PCC (+16.67%), Caudan Development Ltd (+4.17%), Omnicane Ltd (+2.08%) and New Mauritius Hotels (+0.88%). The worst performers were: POLICY Ltd (-22.58%), Sun Resorts Ltd (-5.25%), Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-3.43%), Promotion and Development Ltd (-3.03%) and ENL Commercial Ltd (-2.88%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 142.75 points and 166.21 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 43 billion. A total volume of 472,663 shares for a total value of Rs 13.8 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since their listing on the stock exchange as at Monday 3 September 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, Associated Commercial, United Bus Service, Morning Light, Union Flacq, Union Sugar Estates, Chemco, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), Livestock Feed Ltd (O) and FIDES. The total return varies from 25.91% to 55.15%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a negative note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index lost 0.51 per cent and 0.09 per cent, respectively. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC 40 went down 0.01 per cent, 1.13 per cent and 0.59 per cent, respectively, during the week.
