At the closure of the session on Monday 23 July, the Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed at 5,318.31 points whereas the all-share index, SEMDEX, closed at 1,743.98 points, losing 0.70% during the week. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 336.31 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 165.20 billion.

Shares of Terra Mauricia Ltd (TERA), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL) and Swan Insurance Co. Ltd (SWAN) were exchanged for a total value of Rs 89 million, Rs 69 million, Rs 65 million, Rs 15 million and Rs 6 million respectively during this time frame. The shares of TERA, SBM, MCB, NMHL and SWAN closed at Rs 39, Rs 81.50, Rs 167, Rs 66 and Rs 326, respectively, on Monday 23 July 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 40 stocks figuring on the Official List, 5 moved up during the week, 12 remained stable and 23 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (+2.33%), Omnicane Ltd (+2.01%), Mauritian Eagle Insurance Co. Ltd (+1.39%), Terra Mauricia Ltd (+1.30%) and Innodis Ltd (+0.48%). The worst performers were: Automatic Systems Ltd (-10%), Promotion and Development Ltd (-6.34%), POLICY Ltd (-5%), Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers Ltd (-5%) and Sun Resorts (-3.79%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 147.06 points and 171.24 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 52.18 billion. A total volume of 1.71 million shares for a total value of Rs 19.33 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since their listing on the stock exchange as at Monday 23 July 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, Associated Commercial, United Bus Service, Morning Light, Union Flacq Ltd, Union Sugar Estates, United Investments, Chemco, Le Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O) and FIDES. The total return varies from 26.91% to 56.47%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.36 per cent and 0.58 per cent during the week. In Europe, Germany’s DAX and France CAC 40 went up 1.11 per cent and 0.41 per cent, respectively, whilst Britain’s FTSE lost 0.25 per cent during the week.
