Market ends week on a positive note

The local stock market ended the week on a positive note. The SEM-ASI and the SEMTRI-ASI gained 0.12% and 0.16% respectively at the end of the days under review (28 April - 8 May 2017).

The total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 8th May 2017 at 7,098.77 points, gaining 35.21 points in one week. Since the start of 2017, the SEMTRI has achieved a growth of 12.52%. The SEMDEX ended the same session at 2,025.56 points, growing by 12.01% on a year-to-date basis. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 392.47 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 106.79 points. The total market capitalisation of the SEM-ASI constituents stood at Rs 368.94 billion at market close on Monday.

Total transactions amounted to Rs 112.9 million during the week and the top five trading securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), Promotion and Development Ltd (PAD), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL) and CIM Financial Services Ltd (CIM). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 36.2 million, Rs 16.6 million, Rs 8.9 million, Rs 7.2 million and Rs 7 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, PAD, NMHL and CIM closed at Rs 230.00, Rs 7.60, Rs 100.00, Rs 22.50 and Rs 9.00 on Monday 8th May 2017.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 64 stocks figuring on the Official List, 18 moved up during the week, 38 remained stable and 8 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: POLICY Ltd (+7.62%), Air Mauritius Ltd (+6.23%), CIM Financial Services Ltd (+6.13%), Caudan Development Ltd (+3.88%) and Terra Mauricia Ltd (+2.96%). The worst performers were: Sanlam Real Estate Investment Ltd (-8.62%), Lottotech Ltd (-5.36%), Promotion and Development Ltd (-4.76%), BlueLife Ltd (-4.42%) and CIEL Limited (-1.32%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 213.26 points and 280.43 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 49.63 billion. A total volume of 5.5 million shares for a total value of Rs 54.3 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: ABC Banking Corporation, Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd and Morning Light Ltd. The total return varies from 19.34% to 38.34%.

On the international front, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 0.32% and 0.88% respectively in one week. In Europe, the FTSE-100, the CAC and the DAX gained 1.30%, 3.13% and 2.24% respectively during the same period.
