Market finishes down during the week

The local market was marked by a drop of the market indices during the week under review (3-10 February 2014).

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, lost 0.27% during the days under review closing the session of Monday 10th February 2014 at 6,588.84 points whereas the main index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 2,067.78 points against 2,074.05 points a week earlier (-0.3%). The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks,ended at 398.61points onMonday. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 224.3 billion.

Total transactions during the week amounted to Rs 213.5 million and the top five trading securities during the week were: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), CIEL Limited (CIEL), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL) and ENL Land Ltd (SAVA). They wereexchanged for a total value of Rs 82.3 million, Rs 35 million, Rs 33 million, Rs 10.9 million and Rs 8.9 million respectively. The shares of MCB, CIEL, SBM, NMHL and SAVA closed at Rs 208.75, Rs 7.20, Rs 1.06, Rs 83.25 and Rs 47.80 respectively on Monday 10th February 2014.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 47 stocks figuring on the Official List, 9 moved up during the week, 23 remained stable and 15 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Air Mauritius Ltd (+5%), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (+3.92%), Vivo Energy Mauritius Ltd (+3.16%), Mauritius Union Assurance Co. Ltd (+1.55%) and ENL Commercial Ltd (+1.38%). The worst performers were:BlueLife Limited (-7.63%) Fincorp Investment Ltd (-3.04%), Sun Resorts Ltd (-2.84%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (-2.78%) P. O. L. I. C. Y Ltd (-2.44%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 179.95 points and 217.70 points respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 44.29 billion. A total volume of 251,512 shares for a total value of Rs 5.06 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualized total returns since their listing on the stock exchange as at Monday 10th February 2014 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, ABC Motors Co. Ltd, United Bus Service, Associated Commercial, Morning Light Ltd, The Union Sugar Estates Co. Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), United Investments Ltd, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée and FIDES. The annualized total returns varies from 22.70% to 46.55%.

On the international front, financial markets ended on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite went up 0.61% and 0.54% during the same time frame. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC-40 gained 1.26%, 0.94% and 1.50% respectively in one week.
