SEMTRI reaches its highest level

The local stock market was marked by important gains during the week and saw the total Return Index, SEMTRI reaching its highest level since July 1989.The SEM-ASI and the SEMTRI-ASI gained 0.22% and 0.18% respectively at the end of the days under review (21 - 28 April 2017).

The SEMTRI closed the session of Friday 28th April 2017 at a record level 7,063.56 points, gaining 51.17 points in one week. Since the start of 2017, the SEMTRI has achieved a growth of 11.96%. The SEMDEX ended the same session at 2,016.94 points. On a year-to-date basis, the SEMDEX has grown by 11.53%. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 391.35 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 106.24 points. The total market capitalisation of the SEM-ASI constituents stood at a record level of Rs 368.5 billion at market close on Friday.

Total transactions amounted to Rs 315.7 million during the week. The top five trading securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), CIM Financial Services Ltd (CIM), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), ENL Land Ltd and Alteo Ltd. They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 175 million, Rs 51.6 million, Rs 19.5 million, Rs 11.3 million and Rs 10.4 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, CIM, SBMH, ENL Land and Alteo closed at Rs 228.75, Rs 8.48, Rs 7.60, Rs 46.95 and Rs 32.75 on Friday 28 April 2017.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 64 stocks figuring on the Official List, 16 moved up during the week, 34 remained stable and 14 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: ENL Land Ltd (+6.70%), CIEL Ltd (+5.28%), Rogers & Co. Ltd (+4.29%), Promotion and Development Ltd (+3.96%) and Air Mauritius Ltd (+3.80%). The worst performers were: New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-2.17%), Caudan Development Ltd (-1.90%), ENL Commercial Ltd (-1.75%), POLICY Ltd (-1.63%) and SBM Holdings Ltd (-1.20%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Friday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 210.48 points and 276.77 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 48.98 billion. A total volume of 1.3 million shares for a total value of Rs 34.2 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: ABC Banking Corporation, Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd and Morning Light Ltd. The total return varies from 19.40% to 37.62%.

On the international front, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 1.96% and 2.23% respectively in one week. In Europe, the FTSE-100, the CAC and the DAX gained 1.67%, 3.82% and 3.46% respectively during the same period.
