Politique monétaire : Bheenick remet en question l’indépendance du MPC

Le Gouverneur de la Banque de Maurice a rallumé la mèche en remettant en question le fonctionnement du comité de politique monétaire. Il plaide pour l’indépendance opérationnelle du Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) dans sa Letter to stakeholders. « The time is ripe for a review of legislation to give the bank operational independence in the formulation and implementation of the monetary policy as is the case not just in most developing economies but also in a number of major central banks. »

Rhundeersing Bheenick insiste pour une approche « adulte » afin de mieux comprendre la politique fiscale et la politique monétaire. Commentant sur la coordination entre la politique fiscale et la politique monétaire, il soutient que  « if all instruments have to be borne by one side, then this can hardly qualify as ‘coordination’. Regrettably, much of the time, this has been the case for monetary policy, where compromises were expected from the Bank. » Malheureusement, – ou heureusement – ajoute le Gouverneur, de par les statuts de la Banque, « adjustments cannot come from the monetary policy side; and the bank gets blamed unfairly for actually doing the job for which it was set up in the first place! »
