IN 1715, coffee was introduced to Mauritius by the Compagnie Française des Indes. However, crops were decimated following multiple epidemics.

In 1961, La Compagnie Sucrière de Bel Ombre (CSBO) acquired land in Chamarel and Case Noyale. The yield of sugar cane was then rather low and the idea of a coffee plantation began to germinate.

Later, in 1967, the first coffee trees were planted and Café de Chamarel factory started its activities of processing coffee. Having succeeded in adapting Arabica coffee to climatic and geological conditions of Mauritius, Case Noyale Ltée, a sister company of CSBO, proceeded to its first coffee harvest in 1970. Le Café de Chamarel is to date the only coffee plantation in Mauritius.

Between  2008 and 2013, the area of plantation was doubled, thus making it possible to expand the market.

Today, with 50 years of experience in coffee transformation, Le Café de Chamarel has a total number of 10 employees who are experts in the transformation of harvested coffee cherries to green beans and then, the green beans to roasted coffee.
