The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 15 October 2012 at 5,170.54 points. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed at 1,694.10 points. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 326.93 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 167.53 billion.

Shares of The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers Ltd (MSM), Rogers, Sun Resorts Ltd (SRL) and State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM) were exchanged for a total value of Rs 134.9 million, Rs 113.5 million, Rs 30.9 million, Rs 19.2 million and Rs 11.1 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of MCB, MSM, Rogers, SRL and SBM closed at Rs 163, Rs 7.50, Rs 168, Rs 28 and Rs 83, respectively, on Monday 15 October 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 41 stocks figuring on the Official List, 11 moved up during the week, 18 remained stable and 12 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Plastic Industry (Mtius) Ltd (+15.63%), Belle Mare Holding (+8.11%), MCFI (+6.88%), Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers (+6.38%) and Mauritius Oil Refineries Ltd (+3.33%). The worst performers were: Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-6.06%), Automatic Systems Ltd (-4.41%), Promotion and Development Ltd (-3.33%), United Docks (-2.56%) and Mauritius Union Assurance Co. Ltd (-1.64%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 141.59 points and 165.14 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 42.39 billion. A total volume of 1.57 million of shares for a total value of Rs 25.49 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since the beginning of 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, Union Flacq Ltd, Ciel Textile Ltd, Associated Commercial, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Ascencia Ltd, FIDES, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), Mauritius Secondary Industries Ltd and Morning Light Ltd. The total return varies from 2.52% to 302.78%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a negative note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index went down 2.07 per cent and 2.94 per cent, respectively. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC 40 lost 2.24 per cent, 1.32 per cent and 1.97 per cent, respectively, during the week.
