Market closes on a positive note

The local stock market finished on a positive note the week under review (23 February-2 March 2015). The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI grew by 0.60% and 0.61% respectively at the end of the days under review.

The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the session of Monday 2nd March 2015 at 2,018.65 points, gaining 12.08 points during the week. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, ended the same session at 6,619.66 points. The SEM-10 index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, finished at 381.04 points. The market capitalisation stood Rs 224.4 billion at market close on Monday.

Total transactions amounted to Rs 271.5 million during the week. The top five traded securities during the week were: MCB Group Limited (MCBG), Terra Mauricia Ltd (TERA), Rockcastle Global Real Estate Co. Ltd (ROCK), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH) and ENL Land Ltd. They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 166.4 million, Rs 22.1 million, Rs 16.8 million, Rs 13 million and Rs 6 million. The shares of MCBG, TERA, ROCK, SBMH and ENL Land closed at Rs 205.00, Rs 33.50, USD 2.45, Rs 1.01 and Rs 50.50 on 2nd March 2015.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 51 stocks figuring on the Official List, 15 moved up during the week, 18 remained stable and 18 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: BlueLife Limited (+13.79%), Terra Mauricia Ltd (+9.84%), Alteo Ltd (+6.55%), CIM Financial Services Ltd (+5.05%) and Air Mauritius Ltd (+4.14%). The worst performers were: Go Life International PCC (-20%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (-7.32%), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-5.90%), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (-2.55%) and Caudan Development Ltd (-2.24%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 201.16 points and 249.12 points, respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 47.54 billion. A total volume of 79 million shares for a total value of Rs 156.9 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Morning Light Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Phoenix Investment Ltd, Anglo Mauritius Assurance Society Ltd, The Union Sugar Estates Ltd and United Investment Ltd. The total return varies from 22.46% to 40.87%.

On the international front, financial markets closed on a mixed note. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.04% whilst the NASDAQ Composite went up 0.15% during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain FTSE-100 and France CAC-40 gained 3.18%, 0.46% and 2.50% respectively during the same time frame.
