Market ends week up

The local stock market ended the week in positive territory. The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI gained 0.34% and 0.51% respectively at the end of the days under review (4-11 July 2016).

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 11 July 2016 at 5,999.99 points against 5,969.67 points a week earlier. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 1,757.05 points, gaining 5.93 points in one week. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 339.36 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 99.88 points. The market capitalisation stood at Rs 190.64 billion at market close on Monday.

Total transactions during the week amounted to Rs 188.3 million. The top five traded securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), Rogers & Co. Ltd (ROGE), Terra Mauricia Ltd (TERA) and Sanlam Africa Real Estate Investments Ltd (SARE). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 119.5 million, Rs 17.6 million, Rs 11.5 million, Rs 9.8 million and Rs 6.4 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, ROGE, TERA and SARE closed at Rs 212.50, Rs 0.63, Rs 28.45, Rs 30.50 and USD 4.50 on Monday 11 July 2016.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 62 stocks figuring on the Official List, 12 moved up during the week, 42 remained stable and 8 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Gamma-Civic Ltd (+4.55%), Terra Mauricia Ltd (+1.67%), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (+0.99%), CIM Financial Services Ltd (+0.90%) and LUX* Island Resorts Ltd (+0.87%). The worst performers were: Sanlam Africa Real Estate Investments Ltd (-10%), Air Mauritius Ltd (-7.95%), Harel Mallac Ltd (-2.99%), MDIT Ltd (-1.96%) and Lottotech Ltd (-1.95%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 194.80 points and 251.76 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 44.88 billion. A total volume of 613,190 shares for a total value of Rs 15.44 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd, Morning Light Ltd and United Investments Ltd. The total return varies from 20.07% to 35.13%.

On the international front, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 1.10% and 1.94% respectively during the week. In Europe, France CAC-40, Germany DAX and London FTSE-100 registered a loss of 1.95%, 1.50% and 1.74% respectively in one week.
