Market ends week in positive territory

The local stock market ended the week in positive territory. The SEM-ASI and the SEMTRI-ASI gained 0.37% at the end of the days under review (27 June - 3 July 2017).

The total return index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 3rd July 2017 at 7,496.93 points, growing by 51.28 points in one week. The SEMDEX ended the same session at 2,129.99 points, up by 0.69% in one week. Since the start of 2017, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX have achieved a growth of 18.83% and 17.78% respectively. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 414.47 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 118.98 points. At market close of Monday, the total market capitalisation of the SEM-ASI constituents stood at Rs 401.24 billion.

Total transactions amounted to Rs 939.8 million during the week. The top five trading securities were: Mara Delta Property Holdings Ltd (DEL), MCB Group Limited (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), Universal Partners Ltd and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 693 million, Rs 129.4 million, Rs 45 million, Rs 13.9 million and Rs 6.5 million respectively. The shares of DEL, MCBG, SBMH, Universal and NMHL closed at USD 1.43, Rs 275, Rs 7.26, GBP 1.00 and Rs 22.25 on Monday 3rd July 2017.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 64 stocks figuring on the Official List, 20 moved up during the week, 33 remained stable and 11 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: MDIT Ltd (+5.02%), Caudan Development Ltd (+2.83%), Mauritius Union Assurance Co. Ltd (+2.61%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (+2.40%) and MCB Group Ltd (+2.04%). The worst performers were: United Docks Ltd (-5.08%), BlueLife Ltd (-3.83%), Automatic Systems Ltd (-3.33%), Sun Limited (-1.91%) and ENL Land Ltd (P) (-0.90%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 212.77 points and 282.31 points respectively. A total volume of 1.5 million shares for a total value of Rs 41.2 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: ABC Banking Corporation, Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, ABC Motors Company Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), The Bee Equity Partners Ltd, Swan Life Ltd and Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd. The total return varies from 21.52% to 40.66%.

On the international front, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went down 0.22% and 1.54% respectively in one week. In Europe, the DAX, the CAC and the FTSE-100 lost 3.66%, 3.05% and 1.70% respectively during the same period.
