The local stock market ends in positive territory the week under review (29 July-5 August 2013). The SEMTRI and the SEMDEX ended with a 0.18% progress during this time frame.

The local stock market ended the week in positive territory. The total return index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 5 August 2013 at 5,864.46 points, gaining 10.82 points in one week. Since the start of 2013, the SEMTRI has registered a growth of 9.32%. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed Monday’s session at 1,871.08 points and has grown by 8.03% on a year-to-date basis. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, ended at 367.74 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 190.11 billion. Foreign investors’ exposure to the local market in terms of net investment (purchases-sales) since the beginning of 2013 totalled Rs 889.59 million.

Total turnover for the week amounted to Rs 139.1 million. The top five traded securities for the week were: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), ENL Land Ltd and Phoenix Beverages Ltd (PBL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 62.4 million, Rs 28.8 million, Rs 17.9 million, Rs 5.1 million and Rs 4.1 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of MCB, NMHL, SBM, ENL Land and PBL closed at Rs 191, Rs 66, Rs 1.02, Rs 42 and Rs 202, respectively, on 5 August 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 11 moved up during the week, 20 remained stable and 14 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: CIM Financial Services Ltd (+3.54%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (+3.16%), Automatic Systems Ltd (+2.94%), POLICY Ltd (+1.56%) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (+1.54%). The worst performers were:Go Life International PCC (-25%), ENL Commercial Ltd (-7.92%), Vivo Energy Mauritius Ltd (-7.89%), United Basalt Products Ltd (-3.13%) and New Gold Issuer Limited (-2.48%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, ended at 151.14 points and 180.91 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 47.08 billion. A total volume of 1.5 million of shares for a total value of Rs 14.25 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Union Flacq Ltd, RHT Holding Ltd, Deep River Investment Ltd (O), Constance La Gaieté Company Ltd, Tropical Paradise Ltd (O), Union Sugar Estates Ltd Co Ltd, The United Bus Service Ltd, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), Medical & Surgical Centre Ltd and Compagnie Immobilière Limitée. The total return varies from 14.58% to 33.13%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite index went up 0.64% and 2.12% respectively. In Europe, France CAC 40, Germany DAX and Britain’s FTSE gained 1.94%, 1.97% and 1.42% in one week.
