Market maintains upward momentum

The local market maintained its upward momentumon the back of good corporate results during the week. The SEM-ASI and the SEMTRI gained 1.57% and 1.22% respectively at the end of the days under review (26 September - 3 October 2016).

The all share index, SEM-ASI registered a gain of 28.69 points during the week, ending the session of Monday 3 October 2016 at 1,854.14 points. The SEMDEX closed the same session at 1,832.49 points. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday at 6,311.51 points, registering a gain of 76.22 points in one week. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 350.56 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 102.52 points. The total market capitalisation of the SEM-ASI constituents stood at Rs 336.43 billion at market close on Monday.

Total transactions amounted to Rs 285.9 million during the week. The top five trading securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), Greenbay Properties Limited (GFP), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), MDIT Ltd and Phoenix Beverages Ltd (PBL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 117.1 million, Rs 82.4 million, Rs 20.8 million, Rs 11.3 million and Rs 7 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, GFP, SBM, MDIT and PBL closed at Rs 221.00, GBP 0.09, Rs 0.70, Rs 4.04 and Rs 420.00 on Monday 3 October 2016.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 64 stocks figuring on the Official List, 17 moved up during the week, 39 remained stable and 8 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Lottotech Ltd (+31.46%), Greenbay Properties Limited (+12.50%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (+4.42%), MCB Group Ltd (+3.63%) and MDIT Ltd (+3.06%). The worst performers were: Alteo Ltd (-2.14%), CIEL Ltd (-1.32%), Rogers & Co. Ltd (-0.88%), BlueLife Ltd (-0.88%) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-0.50%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 200.54 points and 259.58 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 46.20 billion. A total volume of 5 million shares for a total value of Rs 88.5 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd, Morning Light Ltd and The Bee Equity Partners Ltd. The total return varies from 18.55% to 34.22%.

On the international front, the financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.65% in one week whilst the NASDAQ registered a gain of 0.12% during the week. In Europe, France CAC-40, Germany DAX and London FTSE-100 went down 0.90%, 1.09% and 0.15% during the same time frame.
