Market slides during the week

The local stock market lost ground during the week under review (18-25 November 2013).The SEMTRI and the SEMDEX slid 0.42% and 0.43%, respectively, at the end of these days.

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 25 November 2013 at 6,424.41 points, losing 27.13 points in one week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 2,033.97 points. Since the start of 2013, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX have grown by 19.76% and 17.43% respectively. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, finished at 397.15 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation amounted to Rs 206.66 billion.

Transactions for the week under review totalled Rs 162.2 million and the most traded securities during the last five sessions were mainly: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), ENL Land Ltd, New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL) and United Basalt Products Ltd – Bond. They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 29.7million, Rs 11.9 million, Rs 10.6 million, Rs 9.1 million and Rs 8.9 million, respectively. The shares of MCB, SBM, ENL Land, NMHL and UBP Bond closed at Rs 204.00, Rs 1.04, Rs 51.00, Rs 83.00 and Rs 100.96 respectively on Monday 25 November 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 14 moved up during the week, 13 remained stable and 18 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: CMPL (+110.43%), National Investment Trust Ltd (+20.52%), ENL Commercial Ltd (+7.48%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (+4.48%) and Harel Mallac Ltd (+2.86%). The worst performers were: Automatic Systems Ltd (-9.45%), MCFI Ltd (-7.48%), Le Meritt Holdings Ltd (-7.18%), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-4.60%) and New Gold Issuer Limited (-3.37%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at their all-time high of 166.27 points and 199.17 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 53.39 billion. A total volume of 4.3 million shares for a total value of Rs 35.3 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Union Flacq Ltd, Constance La Gaieté Company Ltd, Tropical Paradise Ltd, RHT Holding Ltd, Ciel Investment Ltd, Deep River Investment Ltd (O), ENL Investment Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Hotelest and Constance Hotels Services Ltd. The total return varies from 27.17% to 69.44%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite gained 0.65% and 0.14% during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX went up 0.55% whilst France CAC-40 and Britain’s FTSE lost 0.32% and 0.29%, respectively, during the same time frame.
