Shares worth Rs 1 billion traded in one week

The local stock market was marked by heavy trading during the week under review (6-13 April 2015). A total volume of 333 million shares, amounting to Rs 1 billion, were exchanged on the Official market.

The top five traded securities during the week were: MCB Group Limited (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL), Rogers & Co. Ltd (ROGE) and Rockcastle Real Estate Co. Ltd (ROCK). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 505.3 million, Rs 301 million, Rs 120.9 million, Rs 11.7 million and Rs 10.2 million. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, NMHL, ROGE and ROCK closed at Rs 199.00, Re 0.96, Rs 61.75, Rs 29.45 and USD 2.80 on Monday 13th April 2015.

At the level of market indices, the All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the session of Monday 13th April 2015 at 1,953.08 points, losing 24.80 points during the week. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, lost 79.25 points in one week and ended the same session at 6,419.12 points. The SEM-10 index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 371.10 points. The market capitalisation stood Rs 217.14 billion at market close on Monday.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 52 stocks figuring on the Official List, 12 moved up during the week, 20 remained stable and 20 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Go Life International PCC (+25%), MCFI Ltd (+8.41%), Rockcastle Real Estate Co. Ltd (+7.69%), Sanlam Africa Core Real Estate Investments Ltd (+6.74%) and Promotion and Development Ltd (+4.97%). The worst performers were: BlueLife Limited (-11.97%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (-10.28%), Lottotech Ltd (-6.82%), SBM Holdings Ltd (-4%) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-3.52%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, ended at 204.74 points and 253.66 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 48.39 billion. A total volume of 904,710 shares for a total value of Rs 18.25 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Morning Light Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Phoenix Investment Ltd, Anglo Mauritius Assurance Society Ltd, United Investment Ltd and The Union Sugar Estates Ltd. The total return varies from 22.15% to 40.23%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 1.66% and 2.23% respectively during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain FTSE-100 and France CAC-40 registered a growth of 3.40% 3.75% and 3.28%% respectively in one week.
