The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 8 October 2012 at 5,181.41 points against 5,186.13 points a week earlier. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed at 1,698.36 points. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 327.67 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 170.72 billion.

Total turnover amounted to Rs 135.6 million during the week. Shares of The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Terra Mauricia Ltd, New Mauritius Hotels (NMH), Alteo Ltd and Lux Island Resorts Ltd were exchanged for a total value of Rs 32.1 million, Rs 24.3 million, Rs 20 million, Rs 11.5 million and Rs 8.2 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of MCB, Terra, NMH, Alteo and Lux closed at Rs 162, Rs 37.50, Rs 56.50, Rs 28 and Rs 16.50, respectively, on Monday 8 October 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 41 stocks figuring on the Official List, 8 moved up during the week, 24 remained stable and 9 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Lux Island Resorts Ltd (+10%), Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers Ltd (+5.22%), Air Mauritius Ltd (+4.71%), Innodis Ltd (+3.02%) and Mauritius Oil Refineries Ltd (+1.89%). The worst performers were: Go Life International PCC (-12.50%), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (-5.03%), Promotion and Development Ltd (-3.23%), United Basalt Products Ltd (-1.92%) and Alteo (-1.06%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 140.05 points and 163.17 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 41.93 billion. A total volume of 2.1 million of shares for a total value of Rs 98.86 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since the beginning of 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, Union Flacq Ltd, Ciel Textile Ltd, Associated Commercial, Ascencia Ltd, FIDES, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), Mauritius Secondary Industries Ltd and EUDCOS Ltd. The total return varies from 2.53% to 302.78%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index went up 1.29 per cent and 1.64 per cent, respectively. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC 40 gained 2.52 per cent, 2.24 per cent and 3.05 per cent, respectively, during the week.
