The local stock market ended positively the week under review (10-17 September 2012). The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI went up by 0.63% for the period. 58 BUSINESS

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 17 September 2012 at 5,202.38 points, registering a growth of 32.34 points during the week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed at 1,705.24 points on Monday. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 331.96 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 171.42 billion.

Total turnover amounted to Rs 260 million during the week. Shares of The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Terra, Lux Island Resorts Ltd, Alteo Ltd and Swan Insurance Co. Ltd (SWAN) were exchanged for a total value of Rs 96.6 million, Rs 54.6 million, Rs 26.7 million, Rs 21.7 million and Rs 8.3 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of MCB, Terra, Lux, Alteo and SWAN closed at Rs 164, Rs 38, Rs 15, Rs 28.70 and Rs 325, respectively, on Monday 17 September 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 41 stocks figuring on the Official List, 10 moved up during the week, 19 remained stable and 12 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (+13.48%), Air Mauritius Ltd (+5.26%), Caudan Development Ltd (+4.35%), MCFI Ltd (+1.79%) and ENL Land Ltd (+1.57%). The worst performers were: Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers Ltd (-26.32%), Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-8.54%), Compagnie des Magasins Populaires Ltée (-7.50%), Plastic Industry (Mtius) Ltd (-3.70%) and Automatic Systems Ltd (-1.45%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 140.68 points and 163.81 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 42.12 billion. A total volume of 3.63 million of shares for a total value of Rs 21.65 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since the beginning of 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, Union Flacq Ltd, Ascencia Ltd, Ciel Textile Ltd, Associated Commercial, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), FIDES, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Mauritius Secondary Industries Ltd and EUDCOS Ltd. The total return varies from 2.53% to 302.78%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ composite index went up 2.15 per cent and 1.52 per cent, respectively. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC 40 gained 2.74 per cent, 2.08 per cent and 1.78 per cent, respectively, during the week.
