Market ends week in negative territory

The local stock market ended the week in negative territory. The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI lost 0.72% and 0.70% respectively at the end of the days under review (9 - 16 August 2016).

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Tuesday 16 August 2016 at 6,247.32 points, losing 43.99 points in one week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 1,817 points. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 348.26 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 99.25 points. The market capitalisation stood at Rs 217.06 billion at market close on Tuesday.

Total transactions during the week amounted to Rs 124.7 million. The top five traded securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), Lux Island Resorts Ltd (Lux), Omnicane Ltd and Caudan Development Ltd (CAUD). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 65.4 million, Rs 17.2 million, Rs 9.5 million, Rs 5 million and Rs 4.9 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, Lux, Omnicane and CAUD closed at Rs 208.00, Rs 0.70, Rs 58.00, Rs 67.00 and Rs 1.19 on Tuesday 16 August 2016.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 64 stocks figuring on the Official List, 12 moved up during the week, 38 remained stable and 14 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Compagnie des Magasins Populaires Ltée (+15.29%), Air Mauritius Ltd (+7.03%), Promotion and Development Ltd (+4.68%), Caudan Development Ltd (+2.59%) and National Investment Trust Ltd (+2.45%). The worst performers were: New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-5.03%), ENL Land Ltd (-4.26%), Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-3.33%), Alteo Ltd (-3.23%) and Lottotech Ltd (-3.13%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Tuesday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 195.12 points and 252.18 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 44.95 billion. A total volume of 1.2 million shares for a total value of Rs 20.2 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd, Morning Light Ltd and The Bee Equity Partners Ltd. The total return varies from 19.80% to 34.73%.

On the international front, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 0.58% and 0.94% respectively during the week. In Europe, France CAC-40, Germany DAX and London FTSE-100 registered a growth of 1.87%, 2.94% and 1.94% respectively during the same time frame.
