Market ends week in positive territory

The local stock market experienced positive growth during the week under review (11-18 November 2013).The SEMTRI and the SEMDEX closed up 0.66% at the end of these days.

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 18 November 2013 at 6,451.54 points, gaining 42.01 points during the week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, finished the same session at 2,042.80 points. Since the start of 2013, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX have grown by 20.27% and 17.94% respectively. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, was at 400.43 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached 207.56 billion.

Total transactions for the week under review amounted to Rs 190.9 million. The most traded securities during the last five sessions were mainly: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), ENL Land Ltd, New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL), Harel Mallac Ltd (HML) and State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 43.4 million, Rs 31.5 million, Rs 17.6 million, Rs 16.8 million and Rs 16.1 million respectively. The shares of MCB, ENL Land, NMHL, HML and SBM closed at Rs 205.00, Rs 50.00, Rs 87.00, Rs 105.00 and Rs 1.05 respectively on Monday 18 November 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 19 moved up during the week, 13 remained stable and 13 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: CMPL Ltée (+23.48%), National Investment Trust Ltd (+15.24%), MCFI (+5.18%), Belle Mare Holding Ltd (+5%) and United Docks Ltd (+4.29%). The worst performers were: Lux Island Resorts Ltd (-7.76%), Sun Resorts Ltd (-7.69%), Vivo Energy Mauritius Ltd (-5.06%), Le Meritt Holdings Ltd (-4.94%) and Swan Insurance Co. Ltd (-4.38%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at their all-time high of 164.18 points and 196.66 points respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 52.72 billion. A total volume of 7.2 million shares for a total value of Rs 97.9 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Constance La Gaieté Company Ltd, Union Flacq Ltd, RHT Holding Ltd, Ciel Investment Ltd, ENL Investment Ltd, Deep River Investment Ltd (O), United Bus Service Ltd, Hotelest, Constance Hotels Services Ltd and Mauritius Secondary Industries Ltd. The total return varies from 21.16% to 58.42%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite gained 1.27% and 1.70% during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX and France CAC-40 went up 1% and 0.75% respectively in one week whilst Britain’s FTSE lost 0.22% during the same time frame.
