Market ends week up in a volatile environment

The local stock market ended the week under review (24 February-3 March 2014) on a positive note, though marked by some volatility in the evolution of the indices. The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI gained a meagre 0.1% over the week.

The main index, SEMDEX, closed the session of Monday 3rd March 2014 at 2,084.81 points. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the same session at 6,643.11 points. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 402.06 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 223.57 billion.

Total transactions during the week amounted to Rs 129.38 million and the top five trading securities during the week were: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), Mauritius Union Assurance Co. Ltd, ENL Land Ltd (Pref) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 39.7 million, Rs 1.07 million, Rs 132 million, Rs 45.50 million and Rs 82.50 million. The shares of MCB, SBM, MUA, ENL Land (P) and NMHL closed at Rs 212.50, Rs 1.07, Rs 132, Rs 45.50 and Rs 82.50 on Monday 3rd March 2014.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 48 stocks figuring on the Official List, 17 moved up during the week, 15 remained stable and 16 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Gamma-Civic Ltd (+13.92%), Harel Mallac Ltd (+9.09%), Automatic Systems Ltd (+6.48%), POLICY Ltd (+5.13%) and ENL Commercial Ltd (+4.57%). The worst performers were: BlueLife Limited (-5.66%), Omnicane Ltd (-4.35%), CIEL Limited (-3.87%), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (-2.74%) and MCFI Ltd (-2.71%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 180.70 points and 218.64 points respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 44.54 billion. A total volume of 425,213 shares for a total value of Rs 9.8 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualized total returns since their listing on the stock exchange as at Monday 3rd March 2014 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service, Associated Commercial, ABC Motors Co. Ltd, Morning Light Ltd, The Union Sugar Estates Co. Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), United Investments Ltd, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée and EUDCOS. The total return varies from 22% to 46.13%.

On the international front, the financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite went up 1.36% and 1.05% respectively. In Europe, Britain’s FTSE lost 0.42% in one week whereas France CAC-40 and Germany DAX gained 0.62% and 0.36% respectively during the same time frame.
