Market maintains its upward momentum

The stock market pursued on its growth path during the week under review (9-16 December 2013). The SEMTRI and the SEMDEX finished up 1.23% at the end of these days.

The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, gained 80.07 points during the last five sessions and closed the session of Monday 16 December 2013 at a new record high of 6,591.27 points. The All-share index, SEMDEX, ended the same session at 2,072.95 points, reaching its highest level for 2013. Since the start of 2013, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX has registered double digit growth of 22.87% and 19.68%, respectively. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, finished at 403.09 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached an all-time high of Rs 210.62 billion.

Total transactions for the week under review amounted to Rs 211.7 million and the most traded securities during the last five sessions were mainly: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), United Docks Ltd (UTDL), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM) and ENL Land Ltd. They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 102.7 million, Rs 25.1 million, Rs 18.6 million, Rs 11.4 million and Rs 9.3 million, respectively. The shares of MCB, UTDL, NMHL, SBM and ENL Land closed at Rs 206.00, Rs 72.00, Rs 90.00, Rs 1.05 and Rs 51.50, respectively, on Monday 16 December 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 21 moved up during the week, 19 remained stable and 5 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (+8.11%), CIM Financial Services Ltd (+7.77%), ENL Commercial Ltd (+5.26%), United Docks Ltd (+3.60%) and Swan Insurance Co. Ltd (+3.45%). The worst performers were: Plastic Industry (Mtius) Ltd (-6.67%), Ireland Blyth Ltd (-0.99%), Terra Mauricia Ltd (-0.76%), Rogers & Co. Ltd (-0.51%) and MDIT Ltd (-0.34%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at their all-time high of 171.58 points and 206.11 points, respectively. Market capitalization closed at its highest level of 2013, i.e. at Rs 55.09 billion. A total volume of 9.1 million shares for a total value of Rs 80.1 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Union Flacq Ltd, Constance La Gaieté Company Ltd, Deep River Investment Ltd (O), Hotelest Ltd, Constance Hotels Services Ltd, Ciel Investment Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, RHT Holding Ltd, Tropical Paradise Ltd (O) and ENL Investment Ltd. The total return varies from 36.22% to 80.74%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a negative note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite lost 1.65% and 1.51%, respectively. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC-40 went down 1.81%, 1.71% and 1.69% during the same time frame.
