Market slides during the week

The local stock market lost ground during the week under review (13-20 May 2013). The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI slid 0.49% during these days.

The total return index, SEMTRI, lost 30.04 points in one week, closing at 6,048.23 points on Monday 20 May 2013. On a year-to-date basis, the SEMTRI has grown by 12.75%. The All-share index, SEMDEX, ended last Monday’s session at 1,948.33 points, losing roughly 10 points over the week but maintaining however a growth of 12.49% since the beginning of 2013.

The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 384.63 points. On Monday’s market close, market capitalisation reached Rs 197.96 billion. Foreign investors’ exposure to the local market in terms of net investment (purchases-sales) since the beginning of 2013 amounted to Rs 687.81 million.

Transactions totalled Rs 119.06 million during the week. The top five traded securities for the week were: State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), ENL Land Ltd (O), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NHML) and Mauritian Terra Mauricia Ltd (TERA). These were exchanged for a total value of Rs 30 million, Rs 16.9 million, Rs 13.6 million, Rs 9 million and Rs 8.3 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of SBM, MCB, ENL Land, NMHL and TERA closed at Rs 1.04, Rs 193, Rs 48.60, Rs 71 and Rs 42 on 20 May 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 43 stocks figuring on the Official List, 16 moved up during the week, 12 remained stable and 15 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Mauritius Stationery Manufacturers Ltd (+5.71%), Rogers & Co. Ltd (+5.49%), Innodis Ltd (+3.96%), United Basalt Products Ltd (+3.50%) and Mauritian Eagle Insurance Co. Ltd (+3.16%). The worst performers were: Go Life International PCC (-25%), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-7.79%), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (-5.47%), Alteo Ltd (-2.63%) and Vivo Energy Mauritius Ltd (-2.37%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 153.37 points and 181.11 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 45.75 billion. A total volume of 1.65 million of shares for a total value of Rs 14.93 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Union Flacq Ltd, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), Deep River Investment Ltd (O), RHT Holding Ltd, Tropical Paradise Ltd (O), The Union Sugar Estates Ltd Co Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), United Investment Ltd and ENL Investment Ltd. The total return varies from 13.89% to 39.60%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.56% and 1.82%, respectively. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, France CAC 40 and Britain’s FTSE went up by 1.44%, 1.20% and 1.59%, respectively, over the week.
