Market witnesses heavy trading during the week

The local stock market was marked by heavy trading during the week under review (20-27 April 2015). A total volume of 165.96 million shares, amounting to nearly Rs 400 million, were exchanged on the Official market.

83% of the Rs 400 million traded during the week was done on MCB Group Limited (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), CIM Financial Services Ltd (CIM), Rogers & Co. Ltd and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 157.1 million, Rs 140.9 million, Rs 13.7 million, Rs 10.9 million and Rs 9.7 million. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, CIM, ROGE and NMHL closed at Rs 198.00, Re 0.90, Rs 8.98, Rs 29.20 and Rs 61.00 on Monday 27th April 2015.

At the level of market indices, the All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the session of Monday 27th April 2015 at 1,936.45 points, losing 0.44% during the week. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, ended the same session at 6,364.44 points, registering a fall of 28.13 points in one week. The SEM-10 index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 366.78 points. The market capitalisation stood at Rs 215.29 billion at market close on Monday.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 52 stocks figuring on the Official List, 8 moved up during the week, 33 remained stable and 11 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Air Mauritius Ltd (+2.99%), Lottotech Ltd (+2.14%), ENL Land Ltd (+2.04%), Phoenix Beverages Ltd (+1.74%) and POLICY Ltd (+0.83%). The worst performers were: Go Life International PCC (-20%), BlueLife Ltd (-7.41%), Sanlam Africa Core Real Estate Investments Ltd (-4.32%), Mauritius Union Assurance Co. Ltd (-2.63%) and Vivo Energy Mauritius Ltd (-2.17%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, ended at 202.20 points and 250.86 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 47.91 billion. A total volume of 554,142 shares for a total value of Rs 20.3 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Morning Light Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Phoenix Investment Ltd, Anglo Mauritius Assurance Society Ltd, United Investment Ltd and The Union Sugar Estates Ltd. The total return varies from 22.04% to 40.02%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 1.42% and 3.25% respectively during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain FTSE-100 and France CAC-40 registered a growth of 1.05%, 1.09% and 1.13% respectively in one week.
