The total return index, SEMTRI, gained 70.34 points during the week, closing at 5,282.17 points against 5,211.83 points a week earlier. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed at 1,710.57 points on Monday. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 334.46 points on Monday. At market close on the 10 December 2012, market capitalisation reached Rs 173.00 billion.

Shares of New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMH), The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), Rogers & Co. Ltd and Alteo Ltd were exchanged for a total value of Rs 235.2 million, Rs 96 million, Rs 87 million, Rs 7.4 million and Rs 5.9 million, respectively, during this time frame. The shares of NMH, MCB, SBM, Alteo and Rogers closed at Rs 55.50, Rs 166, Rs 92, Rs 30.50 and Rs 150, respectively, on Monday 10 December 2012.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 42 stocks figuring on the Official List, 15 moved up during the week, 21 remained stable and 6 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Automatic Systems Ltd (+19.84%), National Investment Trust Ltd (+7.50%), Rogers & Co Ltd (+7.14%), Promotion and Development Ltd (+5.26%) and MCFI (+3.60%). The worst performers were: Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (-4.67%), Mauritius Oil Refineries Ltd (-3.27%), United Basalt Products Ltd (-2.70%), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-2.63%) and POLICY Ltd (-1.04%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 145.07 points and 169.43 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 43.44 billion. A total volume of 3.95 million shares for a total value of Rs 33.3 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised total returns since the beginning of 2012 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, ABC Motors, Union Flacq Ltd, Ciel Textile Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Associated Commercial, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée (O), United Bus Service Ltd, FIDES and Mauritius Secondary Industries Ltd. The total return varies from 3.82% to 335.19%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.99 per cent while the NASDAQ composite index ended down 1.07 per cent. In Europe, Germany’s DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC 40 gained 1.52 per cent, 0.81 per cent and 1.36 per cent, respectively, during the week.
