Market slides during the week

The local stock market slid during the week (11-18 July 2016). The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI went down -0.85% and -0.19% respectively at the end of the days under review.
The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 18 July 2016 at 5,988.34 points, losing 11.65 points in one week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 1,742.09 points. The SEM-10 Index, which comprises the ten largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 335.40 points. The SEM sustainability index, SEMSI, ended the same day at 98.33 points. The market capitalisation stood at Rs 207.94 billion at market close on Monday.
Total transactions during the week amounted to Rs 208.3 million. The top five traded securities were: MCB Group Ltd (MCBG), SBM Holdings Ltd (SBMH), CIEL Limited (CIEL), New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL) and Rogers & Co. Ltd (ROGE). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 121.6 million, Rs 19.8 million, Rs 11.9 million, Rs 9.9 million and Rs 6.6 million respectively. The shares of MCBG, SBMH, CIEL, NMHL and ROGE closed at Rs 207.00, Rs 0.63, Rs 6.14, Rs 21.00 and Rs 28.45 on Monday 18 July 2016.
An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 63 stocks figuring on the Official List, 12 moved up during the week, 35 remained stable and 16 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Air Mauritius Ltd (+13.64%), POLICY Ltd (+6.29%), ENL Commercial Ltd (+4.20%), Plastic Industry (Mauritius) Ltd (+3.33%) and Mauritius Oil Refineries Ltd (+3.09%). On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 193.52 points and 250.11 points respectively. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 44.58 billion. A total volume of 378,904 shares for a total value of Rs 19.34 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualised return since listing are: Margarine Industries Ltd, United Bus Service Ltd, Associated Commercial Ltd, ABC Motors Ltd, Swan Life Ltd, Phoenix Investment Company Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltd, Morning Light Ltd and United Investments Ltd. The total return varies from 20.02% to 35.06%.
On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ went up 2.04% and 1.47% respectively during the week. In Europe, France CAC-40, Germany DAX and London FTSE-100 registered a gain of 4.34%, 4.54% and 3.18% respectively in one week.
