The stock market starts 2014 on a positive note

The stock market registered solid gains during the week under review (30 December 2013-6 January 2014), pushing the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX to new highs. These two indices rose by 1.41% and 1.36 respectively during this time frame.

The main index, SEMDEX, soared to an all-time high of 2,119.95 points on Monday 6th January 2014, beating its previous record of 2,113.61 points achieved on 16th May 2011. The Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the same session at anew all-time high of 6,751.19 points, gaining 94.11 points during the week. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks,closed at 407.30points onMonday. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached an all-time high of Rs 215.39 billion.

Total transactions for the week under review amounted to Rs 63.3 million and the most traded securities during the last five sessions were mainly: State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), Alteo Ltd, The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (BBCL) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL). They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 19.1 million, Rs 13.5 million, Rs 10.4 million, Rs 4.7 million and Rs 3.4 million, respectively. The shares of SBM, Alteo, MCB, BBCL and NMHL closed at Rs 1.05, Rs 36.65, Rs 213.00, Rs 8.24 and Rs 90.00, respectively, on Monday 6 January 2014.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 18 moved up during the week, 23 remained stable and 4 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Phoenix Beverages Ltd (+10.65%), Gamma-Civic Ltd (+9.71%), Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (+9.28%), ENL Commercial Ltd (+6.67%) and Automatic Systems Ltd (+6.09%). The worst performers were:Plastic Industry (Mtius) Ltd (-5.19%), Innodis Ltd (-1.92%), Alteo Ltd (-0.95%) and Rogers & Co. Ltd (-0.75%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 173.51 points and 209.77 points, respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 54.51 billion. A total volume of 2.11 million shares for a total value of Rs 13.04 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performers in terms of annualized total returns since their listing on the stock exchange as at Monday 6 January 2014 are: Margarine Industries Ltd, ABC Motors Co. Ltd, United Bus Service, Associated Commercial, Morning Light Ltd, The Union Sugar Estates Co. Ltd, Livestock Feed Ltd (O), United Investments, Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée and Anglo Mauritius Assurance Society Ltd. The total return varies from 22.60% to 47.27%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a mixed note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite lost 0.06% and 0.85% respectively in one week. In Europe, Germany DAX lost 0.57% whilst Britain’s FTSE and France CAC-40 went up 0.55% and 0.69% respectively during the same time frame.
