Foreign workers employed
There were 23,545 foreign workers, of whom 19,216 in manufacturing and 1,943 in construction, in large (employing 10 or more persons) establishments at March 2012 compared to 19,902 in March 2009, hence an increase of 3,643 over the past 3 years.
Sugar employment
Employment in sugar cane plantations of 10 hectares or more and in sugar manufacturing decreased respectively to 7,891 and 1,306 in March 2012. Total people employed in the sugar industry were thus 9,197, one quarter of the 1994 figure.
Employment in General Government
Employment in the General Government sector, which comprises ministries, government departments, extra budgetary units and local government, fell by 1,790 from 74,326 in March 2006 to 72,536 in March 2012. There were 47,065 males and 25,471 females.
