SEMTRI reaches its highest level of 2013

The local stock market soared during the week under review (9-16 September 2013) and saw the total return index, SEMTRI, close the session of Monday 16th September 2013 at its highest level of 2013 (+1.3% over the week). The SEMDEX went up 0.78% at the end of the same days.

The SEMTRI closed at 6,158.80 points, gaining 79.30 points in one week. The All-share index, SEMDEX, ended the same session at 1,952.82 points. Since the start of 2013, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX have registered double digit gains of 14.81% and 12.75% respectively. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks, closed at 378.72 points. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 198.41 billion. Foreign investors’ exposure to the local market in terms of net investment (purchases-sales) since the beginning of 2013 amounted to Rs 659.31 million.

Transactions for the week under review totalled Rs 168.7 million and the top five traded securities for the week were: State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), Sun Resorts Ltd (SUN), Rogers & Co. Ltd (ROGE) and MDIT Ltd. They were exchanged for a total value of Rs 60.3 million, Rs 57.1 million, Rs 14.5 million, Rs 4.8 million and Rs 4.7 million respectively during this time frame. The shares of SBM, MCB, SUN, ROGE and MDIT closed at Rs 1.00, Rs 193.25, Rs 31.70, Rs 186.00 and Rs 5.84 respectively on 16 September 2013.

An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 45 stocks figuring on the Official List, 19 moved up during the week, 21 remained stable and 5 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (+12.41%), Sun Resorts Ltd (+7.46%), Ireland Blyth Ltd (+7.14%), ENL Land Ltd (P) (+4.65%) and MDIT Ltd (+4.29%). The worst performers were: State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (-3.85%), New Gold Issuer Ltd (-2.44%), Phoenix Beverages Ltd (-1.23%), ENL Commercial Ltd (-0.88%) and MCFI Ltd (-0.39%).

On the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), at market close on Monday, the two indices, the DEMEX and the DEMTRI, closed at 157.85 points and 189.03 points respectively. Market capitalization stood at Rs 49.17 billion. A total volume of 1.43 million of shares for a total value of Rs 8.94 million has been traded during the week. The ten best performing stocks in terms of total returns since the beginning of 2013 are: Union Flacq Ltd, RHT Holding Ltd, ENL Investment Ltd, Deep River Investment Ltd (O), Constance La Gaieté Company Ltd, Ciel Investment Ltd, Union Sugar Estates Co Ltd, The United Bus Service Ltd, Tropical Paradise Ltd (O) and Livestock Feed Ltd (O). The total return varies from 16.48% to 38.78%.

On the international front, financial markets ended the week on a positive note. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite index went up 3.04% and 1.70% respectively during the week. In Europe, Germany DAX, Britain’s FTSE and France CAC-40 gained 2.82%, 0.56% and 1.61% respectively during the same time frame.
