Local market witnesses heavy trading during the week

The local stock market was characterized by heavy trading during the days under review (6-13 January 2014). The SEMDEX and the SEMTRI gained 0.54% and 0.55% respectively over the week.
Shares worth Rs 281.3 million were exchanged in a market environment that saw the market indices ending the week on a positive note. After reaching its all-time high of 6,797.85 points on Friday 10th January 2014, the Total Return Index, SEMTRI, closed the session of Monday 13th January 2014 at 6,788.57 points, gaining 37.38 points during the week. The main index, SEMDEX, closed the same session at 2,131.34 points, after hitting its all-time high of 2,134.25 points on Friday 10th January 2014.
On a year-to-date basis, the SEMTRI and the SEMDEX have grown by 1.72% and 1.70% respectively. The SEM-7 index, which comprises the seven largest and most liquid stocks,closed at 409.76points onMonday. At market close on Monday, market capitalisation reached Rs 221.20 billion.
The most active trading securities during the week were: The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd (MCB), State Bank of Mauritius Ltd (SBM), Lux Island Resorts Ltd, CIM Financial Services Ltd (CIM) and New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (NMHL). They wereexchanged for a total value of Rs 133.9 million, Rs 53 million, Rs 21.5 million, Rs 17.7 million and Rs 11.8 million, respectively. The shares of MCB, SBM, Lux, CIM and NMHL closed at Rs 216.50, Rs 1.05, Rs 40.50, Rs 8.24 and Rs 91.50, respectively, on Monday 13th January 2014.
An analysis of the evolution of the prices of listed stocks indicates that out of the 46 stocks figuring on the Official List, 18 moved up during the week, 18 remained stable and 10 went down. The best performing stocks for the week were: Le Meritt Holdings Ltd (+19.43%), Sun Resorts Ltd (+5.95%), POLICY Ltd (+5.06%), Mauritian Eagle Insurance Co. Ltd (+5%) and Caudan Development Ltd (+3.51%). The worst performers were:Gamma-Civic Ltd (-3.91%), ENL Commercial Ltd (-3.13%), Phoenix Beverages Ltd (-2.44%), United Basalt Products Ltd (-2.11%) and Terra Mauricia Ltd (-1.27%).
